Speaking about display dishwasher models, the error codes of Bosch ones are generally standardized. But in the previous era, when indicators (LEDs) displayed errors, decipherment was much more complicated for users.
In fact, there was no notion of an error code in devices without displays: a particular combination of burning or flashing indicators corresponded to a problem. Although the set of errors was also the same, devices had many options for displaying them.
Each modern Bosch dishwasher model is equipped with self-diagnosis system. Actually, a user does not know about this system while the device works properly. However, when a breakdown occurs, the error codes of Bosch dishwashers appear on the display. Depending on the failure, these errors can appear alternately, or only one specific error lights up on the screen. In any case, to solve the problem, you have to decode the error.
In order not to repeat the description of the same error codes, they will be fully described only in the first code table for display dishwashers. All subsequent ones will refer to it since the set of codes for modern Bosch dishwashers is extensive enough to cover all previous versions.
Note! In some Bosch dishwasher models, F replaces the E letter in the error code, and the number remains the same.

Error codes for Bosch display dishwashers
Error codes are shown in alphanumeric format E <code> on Bosch dishwashers screen; At the same time, some models display the prefix “E” instead of the “F” one. Search for codes with both prefixes in the table below. Besides that, we decided to turn on the error message in dishwashers without a display. Thus, in the normal operation mode of the device, a Tap indicator blinks or lights if some problem appears. To clarify the error, switch to the diagnostic mode.
Even modern Bosch dishwasher models don’t display all error codes in the normal operating mode. The full set of them is available only in the service (test or diagnostic) mode, launched by a particular combination of buttons on the control panel. We’ll explain how to enter service mode in the next section.
Unfortunately, there is no single standard in the Bosch dishwasher error code system. We know a few code sets. In order not to litter the page by repeating the description of the same errors, I collected all the possible error codes. I will indicate if the same code means different errors. Please note that the E01 and E1 (without zero) codes mean different errors.
Water heating failure of a Bosch dishwasher
The first group of system errors is “water heating failure”. This group includes the following codes:
Heat doesn’t turn on due to sensor or electronics error
The heating element contacts are damaged or the integrity of the device is crippled. If the error E1 appears on the display, there is a high probability that the heating element has burnt. In this case, replacement is required. Anyway, start the test with the heating element. The temperature sensor must be checked as well as the heating element.
Other possible causes
- One of the sensors is faulty. The problem may relate to temperature sensor (thermistor) or water level sensor (pressure switch): diagnostics and replacement
- There is too much water in the tank (it might happen due to a faulty level sensor)
- Temperature sensor doesn’t work correctly (thermostat): replacement
- Breakage in the control circuit of the heating element: check the loop, tighten the contacts and repair the wiring
- A short circuit inside the heating element, leakage to the body
- Heating element burnt out: only replacement will help
- Master controller malfunction: change the part
There are problems with water heating due to a faulty NTC temperature sensor.
System error E2 can appear alternately with the E1 error code. It indicates a malfunction of the water temperature sensor. In this case, the heating element operates at full power all the time, since the information does not come from the temperature sensor. To verify the malfunction cause, it is necessary to measure the resistance of the temperature sensor contacts using a multimeter (it should be approximately 50 kΩ).
As a result, the water temperature in the tank will differ from the set one. It will affect the quality of the wash:
- First, make sure that the wiring between the sensor or the heating element and the master controller is in order. Check whether all contacts and connectors are securely fastened
- The absence of a signal from the sensor may indicate its malfunction: replace a faulty sensor
- Problems in the master controller: provide professional diagnostics and controller replacement
Breakage in a chain of a heating element
This code indicates problems with a direct flow water heater. The E09 error pops up in particular dishwasher models, where the heating element is located in a circulation pump. The problem can be solved by replacing the heating element, but first, you have to diagnose the device using a multimeter and make sure that it is broken.
The circuit of the heating element is open; there is no signal from the heater
- There is a wire breakage or a detached contact in a circuit of the Heating element
- The Heating element has burnt out
- The relay installed on the electronic board has failed. The device controls the operation of the heating element.
E10 error. Cause: Heating element problem. Action: Check for blockages/build-up/limescale that could be stopping water from interacting with the element properly.
The temperature sensor (thermistor) is faulty
The error E11 indicates that the power is not being supplied to the thermal sensor, or the connection between the control module and the temperature sensor is broken. The failure also indicates an impressive list of reasons, so you had better check it one by one:
- temperature sensor contacts;
- wiring leading from the temperature sensor to the damaged place;
Either there is no signal from the sensor at all, or it shows incorrect data:
- There are violations in the sensor circuit wiring: check the loop and repair the circuit, fix the contacts
- Thermistor malfunction: thermistor diagnostics and replacement
- Control board failure
This code is displayed on some Bosch dishwasher models in the case if there is too much scale or dirt accumulated on the heating element. Sometimes after restarting the dishwasher, the E09 error appears instead of the E12 error, but it indicates the same problem.
Dishwashing machine doesn't dry properly because of the deposition covering the heating element
A thick layer of limescale has accumulated on the heater. It is why the part can't cope with dishes drying.
Important! Some dishwashers are equipped with a particular heating element that can be removed, cleaned, and then installed again. After such fixing, the device will work properly.
Water drainage and water gaining failures of the Bosch dishwasher
Malfunctions related to the water heating are considered to be quite rare, but the error codes that report problems of water draining and gaining can be found more often. Let’s list the codes that inform about similar faults.
Water gaining problem: an appliance doesn't fill the tank for the required period of time
E3 failure stops the dishwasher operation if the appliance could not gain water in a specified period of time. In this case, the modern Bosch models automatically drain water, and then the E3 error appears on the display. If the Bosch dishwasher model was released 7-10 years ago, the situation can be different: the kitchen appliance shows the error code, and then waits for the end of the water gaining. What can be done in this case?
- Check water supply system for water.
- Check the filters for clogging. It is installed in front of the filling hose at the dishwasher entrance.
- Check the fill valve for a condition.
- Check the water level sensor for functioning.
- Lastly, check the pump for working, because in rare cases such error is caused by the pump failure.
Depending on the model, the dishwasher will wait until the water completely fills the tank (as it was in the early models). In some cases, washing will stop in a minute (it's a more reasonable solution in modern dishwasher models)
- Water doesn’t enter a dishwashing machine: the water supply valve is shut off, the water pressure in the pipeline is weak, the hose is defective or obstructed, the inlet valve is blocked, etc. - You can solve all of these problems yourself
- User forgot to close the door tightly. So, the electronics prevent the start of the washing program
- The input solenoid valve is out of order: replace the part
- Faulty water level sensor (pressure switch): diagnostics, followed by replacement
- Open circuit or wired contacts in the circuits leading from the master controller to the inlet valve or pressure switch
- Controller failure: if the board is faulty, a dishwasher requires professional diagnostics and replacement
There is too much water in the dishwasher: it doesn’t drain; leakage is detected.
The dishwasher reservoir is full of water. E5 error occurs when the dishwasher gains more water than necessary, and the water level sensor cannot stop this process in time. So, there are problems with the water level sensor. To eliminate the problem, you have to:
- check the water level sensor tube for dirt and clogging;
- check the contacts and wiring related to the sensor for burning;
- check filling valve for any damages. Perhaps, for some reason, it can’t be blocked completely, and water continues to enter the dishwasher.
A pressure sensor or a float indicate an overflow of the appliance: usually, the cause is a blockage or a malfunction of water supply path:
- Open circuit in the pressure switch: fix the wires and secure the contacts
- The pressure switch is faulty: check and replace it
- Fill valve fails, so water continuously enters the machine due to the problem: test and replace
- Electronics failure: this one explains almost any problem
Important! In rare cases, such fault is caused by a malfunction in the dishwasher control unit. In this case, the help of a specialist is required.
Heating doesn't work due to the low water level in the tank
E08 error is similar to another one – E03. The reason is the same – the dishwasher can’t gain the right amount of water on the pallet. This leads to the fact that the circulation pump cannot turn on and function properly, as well as the heating element.
Electronics doesn't allow heating. It happens because the circulation pump has found that there is too little water in its helix.
- Water gaining problem: see the description of the E3 error code
- Self-draining of water due to leakage or incorrectly installed drain is not excluded:
Too hot water enters a dishwashing machine. E13 Error. Symptom: Water temperature exceeding 75C.
Action: Have you connected your dishwasher to a hot water supply? If so switch to cold.
The error occurs when the dishwasher is connected to a hot water tap. Therefore, the device gains water with a temperature above 75 degrees
- The thermal sensor is faulty: check the description of the E11 error code
- If you can't control the temperature of the water poured into the appliance, there is a radical solution. Connect a dishwasher to a cold water tap. Besides, this method has many advantages.
One of the valves or sensors is leaking.
Error E16 occur if the dishwasher cannot block the entering of water into the tank. There is an uncontrolled self-pouring of water into the appliance. Most often, the failure occurs if a clog entered an inlet valve with water and stuck there. It does not allow to the valve to close, so water constantly percolates through it, even if the dishwasher is turned off. So what to do to eliminate the E16 error?
- Check the fill valve for clogging and clean it.
- Check the water level sensor (only if the water does not flow by gravity when the machine is turned off).
- Check if there is excess foam from the detergent (if the error occurred during the dishwashing process).
The appliance has detected leakage in the filler valve or the flow sensor (water meter): this can lead to spontaneous water gaining.
- It is necessary to carefully examine all the sensors and valves (look at the device scheme in the instructions): if you notice a leak somewhere, it’s better to replace the problem part to avoid troubles
- The water level sensor (pressure switch) has some bugs: replace the part
- Too rapid formation of foam in the tank is the possible reason for damage, too
Too much water pressure or overflow
E17 Error indicates problems related to water gaining. This error is narrow-profile and most often means that the inlet valve overlaps are hindered or cannot be blocked at all due to an excessive water pressure. Sometimes a similar error can occur due to a water-hammer effect. In this case, just restart the device and it will work fine. If the pressure in the water pipe is too high all the time, partially shut off the water supply on the riser pipes.
The inlet valve is difficult to close due to the excessively high pressure of the entering water. As a result, your dishwashing machine may get too much water poured into the tank.
- Contact a plumber: ask the specialist to check and reduce the pressure in the water supply
- You can cover the water supply a little bit that comes to your dishwasher
- Faulty inlet valve: replacement
- Level sensor malfunction: change it
Please note! In rare cases, when the E17 error appears, it is necessary to check the sensor that measures the amount of supplied water.
Too little water in the tank
E18 Error. Symptom: Water level too low (underfill). Cause: Can be due to a problematic water valve.
Washing process doesn't stop, although its quality is unlikely to be good. Most of all, there is a problem with the filling valve, but other reasons might spoil the work, too: read the description of E3 and E14 error codes
E19 Error. Dispenser fault End of program Dispenser defective Check component Wires interrupted/broken Check wires
Circulation pump blockage
E21 Error appears on the display if there are problems with the dishwasher’s pump and it refuses to drain water. When the error occurs, the pump is powered and it reacts with the control unit and sensors properly but does not perform its function.

What could have happened?
- The impeller has been jammed, and it does not rotate (possibly it was caused by foreign objects wounded around it);
- The rotor has stuck to the sleeve walls. It needs to be cleaned and greased (in this case, the E21 may trench upon the E22 error code);
- The pump mechanism has worn out and needs to be changed.
Errors with clogging of the Bosch dishwasher
Errors related to a number of different types of clogging are found in Bosch dishwashers most often. Usually, blockages occur if the user neglects to clean dishes from food debris before putting it in the wash baskets. What systemic errors are related to the clogging?
The decoding of the code sounds like “a hole for water draining is blocked“. What does it mean? The dishes are not placed properly in the wash baskets, some of the objects covered the hole through which water is pumped from the dishwasher bunker. Also, the hole can be clogged with dirt.
Water doesn't drain due to clogging of the drain path. In some cases, the drain pump doesn't work.
This error indicates that one of the dishwasher filters is dirty or there are problems with the pump (if the rotation of an impeller is hindered).
There are many causes for draining obstacles:
- Defect or obstruction of the drain hose, air bubbles could form in the hose: carefully inspect the hose, disconnect it and clean
- Blockage in the pan
- Drain filter clogging: you can clean it yourself
- Incorrect drain connection - see the installation instructions for your dishwashing machine
- There is a clog in a drain pump or a lot of dirt accumulated on its blades: try cleaning the part
- Drain pump problems: leakage or breakage - contact the service center
- An open circuit in the power supply of the pump or pressure switch: check the loop, repair the wires and fasten the contacts
- The pressure switch breakage: check and replace it
- Electronics failure: contact the service center
F24 failure has a simple and understandable deciphering – the drain hose is bent or clogged, the sewerage and the drain outlet of the siphon are blocked. But in fact, the E24 error can occur for the most unexpected reasons. By the way, it may easily coexist with the E22 breakage.
Water draining problem caused by a drainage pump
This error occurs when the pump nozzle or drain hose is clogged at the base. Therefore, the power of the drain pump is not enough. In order to squirt the dirty water, sensors signal to the control unit that shows the E25 error code and stops the dishwasher. To eliminate the problem, you have to clean the branch pipe and drain hose from the blockages and check the pump impeller.
A blockage in the drain path, the drain pump clogging or incorrect installation of its lid: see the description of E22 error to find out more details
Pay attention! Sometimes the E25 error boarders with the E22 one, that is, when the machine is rebooted, these failures occur alternately. In this case, it is necessary to check the impeller for rotations.
Errors related to sensors and water switches in the Bosch dishwasher
The Bosch dishwasher is provided with a sufficiently large number of different sensors that help to control and operate the processes of implementing washing programs. When these sensors fail, the self-diagnosis system detects this and displays the following errors on the Bosch dishwasher display:
The sprinkler is not working properly
This error means that the sensor controlling the pressure and flow of water that is supplied to the sprinkler does not fulfill its functions. It is defective or just cannot work properly due to the clogging. It often happens that hard water causes clogging in the spray nozzles, and the water can’t enter through the damaged area, which leads to the E4 errors.
There is a problem with the flow sensor (switch): it is set in the wrong position, but other reasons can cause the error:
- Tableware in the chamber blocks the rotation of the spray
- Damage to the flow sensor circuit
- Flow sensor breakage or clogging: clean the part or replace it if cleaning doesn't help
- Something has happened to the motor that changes the position of the sensor.
- Master controller malfunction
There is breakage of a water sensor that controls water quality (hardness, pollution, turbidity) during rinsing
The water quality sensor has failed. This is a special sensor that monitors the water quality in the dishwasher, which is installed next to the heating element. Sometimes it is possible to give the device a second life, changing burnt contacts, but in 95% of cases, replacement is required.
Washing continues on the assumption of heavy pollution.
- Clean the dishwasher chamber
- Open sensor circuit: check and repair wiring, fix contacts
- The sensor is faulty: only replacement will solve the problem
- Master controller malfunctions: applying to a specialist is inevitable
No door locking signal
As a result, the electronics block the start of washing. Possible reasons for this:
- Interruption of the connection between the triac control door sensor and a master controller: check the loop and examine the contacts
- Something broke in the door lock: most of all, you can fix the lock yourself
- Faulty door closing sensor: replacement
- Master controller problems: diagnostics and replacement
Drying fan breakage
- Open fan control circuit: check circuit and contacts
- Faulty fan sensor: replacement
- Something broke inside the fan: replace the part
- Master controller problems: diagnostics and replacement
Water flow sensor (reed switch) is faulty.
The sensor that controls the amount of water entering the dishwasher is not working properly. This malfunction can be fixed only by a specialist, and perhaps, the sensor requires replacement.
When there is no signal from the water inlet sensor, while the circulating pump works as usual, the electronics block the sink. It happens when there is no possibility to control the process of filling the tank with water. Problems with the sensor imply standard actions: check the wiring and contacts, the sensor and the master controller.
Tank water leakage, overflow
E15 error appears in modern dishwashers equipped with the Aqua stop system if there is a water leakage. Act according to the following recommendations:
- check the dishwasher tray for leaks;
- check the hoses;
- check other components for leaks.
Aqua-Stop, the float of the leakage control system, has been activated. It indicates that water has got inside the pan.
- Water flows into the pan. It is necessary to turn off the water and carefully examine all the places of leakage: the body, hoses and their connections, etc.
- The drain pump is leaking: most of all, it is not subject to repair, and only replacement will help.
- The sensor for monitoring the water leakage or the circuit of the device is faulty: it is necessary to check all the wiring and contacts from the sensor to the control board. Applying to specialists is the best decision.
- An error may appear after replacing the electronic control module: in this case, restarting the dishwasher will help.
Cause: Water switch/regulator problem.
Action: Check water switch and replace if required.
Cause: Fault detected with turbidity sensor.
Symptom: Dishes not getting clean. Dirty water in the tub.
Errors related to an electrician in a Bosch dishwasher
Due to a large number of sensors, a modern dishwasher is provided with a complicated electrician system. The slight burning of a terminal or wipe of one of the numerous wiring lead to the following errors:
These errors indicate a failure in the electrical or in the dishwasher electronic system. First of all, the kitchen appliance has to be restarted by “on/off” buttons. As a rule, after this, the error is eliminated. If the breakage repeats many times, in order to avoid the occurrence of new problems, you need to turn off the device and call a specialist.
Dishwasher control unit is out of order
- First, check the mains voltage: if it is obviously too low or high, apply to an electrician
- Check the wires leading to the electronic boards for open or short circuit. Make sure that all the connectors on the boards are set up tight in the sockets
Important! You can try to find the cause of the problem by yourself, but in this case, you have to check all the wiring and terminals. To say the truth, this is a scrupulous and unpleasant work and there is no guarantee that you will find a malfunction.
No heating due to the electronics issues
Other possible causes
Most likely, something happened to the Heating element relay that controls the heater function
- Breakage of a wire or a detached contact in a circuit of the Heating element
- The relay of the heating element, installed on the electronic board, failed: replace the board
Additional drying mode doesn't work due to electronics failure
There is a problem with the relay of an additional heating element which controls the operation of the heater
- Breakage of a wire or a detached contact in a circuit of a heating element
- Relay of a heating element, placed on the electronic board, failed: replace the board
Breakdown of the circulation pump, which supplies water for washing under the pressure
Cause: Short or break causing incorrect resistance in winding of the circulation pump or the motor.
The control module has fixed abnormal electrical or electronic circuit of the pump motor
- Open circuit in the motor of the pump: check the wiring, tighten the contacts, fasten the connectors on the board
- There are foreign objects got on the pump blades that block it.
- Tachogenerator failure: replace the element
- The motor capacitor is out of order: change it, too
- The pump is faulty: diagnostics is required; repair is possible, but often it doesn't help - contact the service center
Drain pump breakage
As error code E20, but this time the electrical problem is with the drain pump.
The control module has fixed abnormal electrical or electronic circuit of the pump motor
- Open circuit in the motor pump: check the wiring, tighten the contacts, fasten the connectors on the board
- There are foreign objects in the pump blades which block the part.
- Tachogenerator is out of order: replace it
- The pump has failed: repair after diagnostics is possible, but it helps rarely - contact the service center
Mains voltage is too low
If you connect the dishwasher directly to the mains, you may face the E27 error. Voltage drops that periodically occur in the network can have a serious negative impact on electrical appliances. It can even break the device at all. Therefore, if your dishwasher’s screen often shows the E27 error, connect the device to the network via a voltage regulator and the problem will be solved.
Apply to an electrician to check and repair electrical wiring. If it doesn't help, there are problems inside the device. In this case, you will have to contact the service center. Also, in the article, you can read about the possible problems related to the dishwasher power supply.
Software error
It states about dishwasher system failure or control module error. If the reload of a dishwashing machine doesn't help, you need to call a specialist to diagnose the problem.
Error codes for Bosch dishwasher without display
It is impossible to find out the error code for non-display Bosch dishwashers that work in normal mode. If something happens, the Tap indicator starts flashing (see error codes above). To get error codes for such models, switch to the service mode (so-called the diagnostic test).
Next, I will describe the service tests for some non-display Bosch dishwashers (and also for some models with a screen). First, you’ll see a general table of key combinations for switching to a diagnostic test on different Bosch dishwasher models. Then, I’ll indicate details with examples for particular models. And finally, you’ll get the rules for displaying error codes on dishwashers.
Switching to service test in Bosch dishwashers
Since the names of buttons on the control panels of different Bosch dishwasher models may vary, I made a table. There are the buttons used to put the dishwasher in test mode.
To enter the test mode, press and hold the buttons listed in the table (2nd and 4th from the left). Then, turn on the machine by pressing the on/off button. Press the specified buttons again to start the test program. Wait for the program to finish and display the error code. To exit the test mode, turn off the dishwasher.
To activate test mode in the fully built models, you have to open the door and close it to test.
The list of models is far from complete in the tables. But the general principles are valid for almost all Bosch dishwasher models. I will describe some of the features a little further. In particular, I will tell you how to run a test program in non-button dishwashers, equipped only with a handle for the washing program selector.

Switching to service test in Bosch shu43e/53e/66e dishwashers
To switch to test mode in Bosch SHU43E/53E/66E dishwasher, first turn the selector handle, responsible for washing mode, to the 6 o’clock position. Then hold the Start/Stop button and turn on the device by pressing the on/off switch. To start the test program, press the Start/Stop button. After completion of the test program, the Clean indicator will flash, and all other indicators will light up.
Next, I’ll describe how to decipher error codes in these models.
Switching to service test in Bosch shv46c, sl84a, shx33a/43e/46a-b dishwashers
To go to test mode in Bosch SHV46C, SL84A, SHX33A/43E/46A-B dishwashers, press and hold the 2nd and 3rd buttons from among those three buttons shown on the outline. Then turn on the machine by pressing the on/off button. After switching to the test mode, the indicator of the 2nd button (Regular Wash) will light, and the 3rd button will flash. Press the 2nd button (Regular Wash) to select the test program. Thus, the indicator of the 3rd button will light up. To start the test program, press the 3rd button. Wait until the test program completes to see the error code. You can skip particular tests by pressing the 2nd button (Regular Wash). To exit the test mode, turn off the machine.
Next, I’ll reveal how to decipher error codes in these models.
Switching to service test in Bosch shv/x/y99 dishwashers
To enter the test mode of the Bosch SHV/X/Y99 dishwashers, open the door, press and hold the two buttons, placed on left. Then, turn on the appliance by pressing the on/off switch. Continue pressing the “+” button until “S-3-” appears on display. Next, press the start button to check if there were any errors during the last eight washes. To start the test program, close the door. To see the error codes, wait for the tests to complete. You can skip particular tests by pressing the “-” button. To exit the test mode, turn off the dishwasher. To clear the error codes, select “S-6-“.
Further, I will tell how to decipher error codes in models with 2 or 3 display digits and on full-text displays for two lines.
Error reporting to display with 2 or 3 digits
In the user (standard) dishwasher mode you can see a much smaller number of error codes:

Bosch SHX46A Dishwasher Error Codes
- While pushing (and holding) any two wash cycle buttons, turn the dishwasher on with the on/off switch. After releasing the buttons, LED “B” will be lit and LED “C” will flash, confirming you’re in the special programs menu.
- To enter the test program, push button “B” repeatedly until the digital display shows “P1” or until LED “C” is lit.
- Push button “C” to start the program — LED “C” will blink. The steps will show on the digital display (e.g.”S:01″) — push button “B” to skip a step.
- Stored error codes will show on the digital display and LED’s.
The test program can only be stopped/reset by pushing the on/off button – it can’t be done by turning off the power.
